Italian energy bills explained in English: what to check first

Start with the supply data

On an Italian electricity bill, the POD identifies the electricity supply point. On a gas bill, the PDR identifies the gas supply point. These codes are more important than the commercial name because they identify the actual meter/supply.

Also check customer name, address, meter reading type and billing period. Many problems start from a simple mismatch.

Separate consumption from fixed charges

A high bill does not always mean high consumption. Sometimes fixed charges, previous adjustments, deposits, instalments or recalculations make the total look strange.

Look at kWh for electricity and Smc for gas. Then look at the price components, fixed monthly charges and taxes. A calm reading is better than changing supplier immediately.

PUN, PSV and indexed prices

Some offers follow market reference values such as PUN for electricity and PSV for gas, plus additional components decided by the contract. This does not automatically mean good or bad; it means the bill can move with the market.

Fixed price offers can give more stability for a period, but renewal conditions matter. The right choice depends on risk preference, consumption and timing.

Warning signs before signing a new offer

Be careful if someone asks you to decide immediately, promises a guaranteed saving without reading the bill, or does not explain fixed costs and duration.

A serious check starts from your actual bill and your use, not from a generic promise.
